Kevin Costner Says Love Still ‘Could Happen for Me’ After Divorce: ‘People Are Supposed to Be Together’

The actor-director recently told PEOPLE, “I’m not going to let anything harden my heart”

Kevin Costner is confident he’ll find love after divorce.

At the Los Angeles premiere of Horizon: An American Saga, the first of a multi-film franchise he directs and stars in, the Oscar winner told Extra when asked about finding romance again, “My heart? Well, people are supposed to be together. So I’m sure that could happen for me.”

Costner, 69, also told the outlet about his painstaking dedication to bringing his passion project Horizon to the big screen.

“I’m really happy with the movie. The reason I wanted to direct it was I wanted it — I needed it — to be what I dreamed about,” he said. “If you don’t like it, it’s all on me. If you do, just know that every little detail was meant with the idea I knew you might catch it.”

Costner and ex-wife Christine Baumgartner have finalized their divorce after she originally filed back in May 2023. They share three kids, Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 14, plus Costner is dad to adult children Annie, Lily, Joe and Liam. Christine, 50, has since moved on with boyfriend Josh Connor.

He recently told PEOPLE he sees himself falling in love again. “Yeah, I think everybody would like to be in love,” said Costner. “There’s such a good feeling that’s associated with that. It may have to be defined in a different way, but yeah, I love the idea of that possibility.”

“I’m not going to let anything harden my heart,” he added.

During an interview with Howard Stern earlier this month, the Yellowstone star clarified that he and the singer Jewel were never dating, despite rumors after his divorce.

“No, Jewel and I are friends. We’ve never gone out ever,” he said. “She’s special, and I don’t want, I don’t want these rumors to ruin our friendship because that’s what we have. She’s special to me. She’s beautiful enough to go out with.”

Added Costner of his friendship with Jewel, 50, “I’ve had conversations with her, text-wise, and she’s so smart, and she’s been through a lot herself, and so we have a friendship. We don’t have a romance, and we’ve not dated.”

“She’s beautiful and smart enough for all those things. It just has never happened for us,” explained Costner. “She’s everything you might think, but it just hasn’t happened.”

Horizon: An American Saga is in theaters Friday.
